Introduction

Greys, also called Grey Aliens, are a reported type of humanoid being associated primarily with UFO sightings, alleged alien-abduction experiences and modern extraterrestrial folklore. They are generally described as small or slender humanoids with smooth grey or pale skin, disproportionately large heads, large dark almond-shaped eyes and minimal facial features. Some accounts describe them as having little or no visible hair, small noses and mouths, and thin arms and legs. The term does not identify a scientifically recognized species. Instead, “Greys” is a category used in UFO literature to group recurring descriptions of alleged non-human beings. The modern Grey archetype became especially influential after the reported 1961 encounter of Betty and Barney Hill in New Hampshire. Their account, which included alleged missing time, a spacecraft and humanoid beings, became widely publicized during the 1960s and helped establish many of the features later associated with alien-abduction narratives. Later reports increasingly incorporated the same visual characteristics. The resulting image of a Grey became one of the most recognizable representations of extraterrestrial life in modern popular culture. There is currently no independently verified evidence establishing that Greys are extraterrestrial biological beings.

Description Across Accounts

Although individual reports vary, several characteristics appear repeatedly in descriptions of Greys.
Head and Face
The most recognizable feature is an unusually large head relative to the body. Witnesses commonly describe:
Body
Greys are generally described as shorter and more slender than adult humans. Common descriptions include:
Clothing
Descriptions of clothing are inconsistent.
Some reports describe the beings as apparently naked or covered only by their skin-like appearance. Others describe tight-fitting suits, uniforms or seamless garments.
Because clothing descriptions vary significantly, they are generally less useful for defining the Grey archetype than the characteristic head and eyes.
Movement and Behavior
Witnesses sometimes describe Greys as moving in a controlled, mechanical or unusually smooth manner. Commonly reported behaviors include:

First Reports and the Betty & Barney Hill Case

The modern history of Greys is closely associated with Betty and Barney Hill. On the night of September 19, 1961, the couple were driving through New Hampshire’s White Mountains when they reported seeing an unusual object in the sky. Barney later described seeing humanoid figures associated with the object. The couple subsequently reported a period of missing time. The Hills eventually sought professional assistance and underwent hypnosis with psychiatrist Benjamin Simon.
During these sessions, they described an alleged abduction involving humanoid beings, medical examinations and a spacecraft. Betty also produced a drawing representing a star map that she said she had seen during the experience. The case received major media attention in the mid-1960s. The Library of Congress describes the Hill case as the modern origin of the alien-abduction story, noting that the later account incorporated short grey beings and medical examination imagery. The importance of the Hill case is not that it scientifically established the existence of Greys. Rather, it became a major cultural template for how later alleged alien encounters were described.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Greys real?
Greys are real as a reported entity category and cultural phenomenon. There is currently no independently verified evidence establishing that they are a real extraterrestrial species.
What do Greys supposedly look like?
They are commonly described as small, slender humanoids with grey or pale skin, oversized heads, large dark almond-shaped eyes, small noses and mouths, and minimal visible ears.
Where did the Grey alien idea originate?
The modern Grey archetype is strongly associated with the Betty and Barney Hill case of 1961, which became widely publicized during the 1960s.
Are Greys the same as Zeta Reticulans?
In UFO literature, the terms are often used interchangeably. The Zeta Reticuli connection comes primarily from the interpretation of Betty Hill’s reported star map. It is not established that Greys originate from that star system.
Were Greys recovered at Roswell?
There is no publicly established evidence proving that extraterrestrial Greys were recovered at Roswell. The U.S. Air Force concluded that the Roswell debris came from a balloon-borne research project and found no evidence of recovered extraterrestrial bodies.
